Celebrating 50 Years of NAIDOC at Murrook Culture Centre

We kicked off NAIDOC Week 2025 in true Murrook style - strong, loud and proud!

On Monday, we welcomed community members to celebrate the launch of our special exhibition: “50 Years of NAIDOC”. From Elders who remember NAIDOC’s earliest days to our youngest trainees stepping into their cultural journey, the pride was felt in every conversation and every step.

This year’s NAIDOC theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy”, is more than just words on a poster, it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, and how much further we’ll go, together.

Our exhibition begins with the very first official NAIDOC poster from 1972, featuring the powerful words: “Advance Australia Where?” We were lucky to be joined by three community members born that same year - Janine, Joanna, and Justin - who stood proudly beside the historic poster and reflected on what’s changed (and what still needs to).

The exhibition continues through the decades, proud to feature 1975-born community members like Melissa Lilly, who today leads with strength, resilience and deep connection to culture. Our 2005 crew (some of Murrook’s youngest team members) represent the future. Their energy brings the space to life, reminding us that NAIDOC is not just about looking back, it’s about passing the baton forward.

Come visit Murrook this NAIDOC Week and beyond. Spot your birth year poster, learn something new, share your story and join us in walking together through 50 years of resistance, pride and culture.
