Broughton Island Cultural Heritage Research Lab

One of the most unique and significant spaces now active at Murrook Culture Centre is the Broughton Island Cultural Heritage Research Lab.

This secure archaeological lab is a place where science and culture come together, where stories are carefully unearthed from sand and stone, and where deep connections to Country are studied, protected, and honoured.

Inside this working space, our research team (including cultural scientists and local community members) are actively engaged in preserving the rich history of Broughton Island. Each artefact, sample and story helps to build a clearer picture of the past, connecting it meaningfully to the present and future generations.

This work is more than scientific, it's deeply cultural. Every element of research is guided by community knowledge, cultural protocols, and a commitment to caring for Country in the right way.

Murrook is incredibly proud to present this important initiative in partnership with Worimi Traditional Owners, the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council, the University of Sydney, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, and many other valued collaborators.

Together, we are honouring our shared responsibility to protect cultural heritage and to keep story, land and knowledge alive.

Please note: The lab is a working and secure facility, and entry is strictly by authorisation only.
